The Canvas Hammock

Fabric and chair hammocks are often made of canvas, which is designed to be rugged and tough. Generally speaking, canvas hammocks are some of the strongest available, and should be suitable for outside use.

Interestingly, canvas hammocks were made popular by the Navy! They were used for sleeping in as there is much less chance of landing on the floor when the ship is buffeted by waves compared to sleeping in a standard bed.

The word "canvas" actually describes the weave rather than what the material is made of. There are two possibilities for this, plain or duck. The difference between them is how tightly the threads are woven together, duck being tighter than plain. Either way, the material will be dense and heavy making it strong and durable.

As you can read elsewhere on this site, properties such as comfort and durability are partly determined by the material used, which is uncertain in this case. Historians tell us that canvas was originally made of hemp. These days it is more commonly made of cotton or polyester. Cotton is generally considered to be the most comfortable, but polyester is much more durable and better suited to outdoor use. If at all possible, you should try to find out what the canvas is made from as this can make a significant difference to its durability and storage needs.

For outside use, you also need to make sure that the stand and attachments are fully weatherproof. You can read more about stands on other pages of this site.
